In this milestone episode, released as Forefront celebrates its 10th anniversary, Forefront Head of Content Sam Belden presents a highlight reel from six years of At the Forefront. Drawing on clips from guests across the show’s history, Sam traces how conversations on AI, digital assets, market structure and marketing have moved from early predictions to the practical work of turning innovation into operational frameworks and workflows.
The AI segment follows the conversation from the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022 to today, and what stands out is how clear-eyed guests have been throughout. Even amid the excitement around generative AI, leaders from firms like Sterling Trading Tech and Eventus focused on where the technology could add real business value and how to adopt it responsibly, while recognizing that neither firms nor employees could afford to ignore it. As FDATA North America Executive Director Steve Boms notes, AI is clearly where things are headed, both in financial services and far beyond it.
The digital assets segment moves from the FTX meltdown and the crypto winter that followed to the January 2024 approval of spot bitcoin ETFs and the push for a unified regulatory framework after the 2024 election. Along the way, guests including Martin Garcia, then at VersiFi, EDX Markets CEO Tony Acuña-Rohter and Digital Ascension Group’s Jake Claver anticipated what it would take to bring institutions into the space. With the CLARITY Act stalling in the Senate in September, much of the oversight burden still rests with regulators, but the unifying thread remains the same: institutional adoption rests on frameworks and infrastructure that market participants can trust.
On market structure, STA President and CEO Jim Toes’ recurring appearances on the show illustrate how quickly the agenda can change, from the ambitious SEC agenda under Gary Gensler to the shift in regulatory philosophy under Paul Atkins and the growing focus on tokenization, prediction markets and AI. CAPIS’ Chris Hurley adds a longer view of how far the industry has come, recalling when there were just two places to route an order, compared with as many as 60 today.
The episode closes on marketing and communications, with clips from Forefront Co-Managing Partner Eric Soderberg, SubjectLine.com founder Jay Schwedelson and Ben Wood of Infopro Digital. Newsrooms have contracted, Substacks and podcasts have filled much of that space and AI has transformed how content is created and found. Even so, Sam argues that the blueprint for successful marketing remains the same: understand your differentiators, package them into the right story and add value to every conversation your brand enters.
