To Survive a Challenging Future, Shopping Malls Look to Past

In her look at the future of US shopping Malls, Morning Consult’s Joanna Piacenza leverages data intelligence firm Thasos Group‘s data on the US REIT sector.

Monthly foot traffic is down at least 3 percent on a year-over-year basis, according to a July report from Thasos, which gathered data from 98 percent of Class A, B and C malls across the country from November 2016 through May 2017. However, shopping centers that were anchored with grocery stores, community centers or venues carrying consumer staples had more foot traffic than those with traditional department stores as anchors, Thasos found.
