Jim Toes, President and CEO of the Security Traders Association, recently appeared on Nasdaq Trade Talks with Jill Malandrino to promote his organization’s 85th Annual Market Structure Conference, which will play host to professionals from a variety of top exchanges, regulators, vendors and buy- and sell-side firms from October 3-5.

Jill Malandrino: Tell us what we can expect to come out of STA 2018.
Jim Toes: This will be our 85th event and our fifth year down in DC. Much of the content will be structured around regulation and the role that legislation has on our financial services industry.
JM: What are some of the key issues that we face as an industry in regards to market structure?
JT: Regulation and technology have always had an impact on our industry — they always have and they always will. But I think we would all be hard-pressed to find a point in time where both those forces are as strong as they are today. On the regulatory side, we have legacy regulation from the Dodd-Frank era colliding with the shift that we’ve seen with the change in the presidency. We also have forces like MiFID II coming in. Then we have some of these microstructure issues — access fee pilot, Tick Size Pilot, market data — that will be grabbing a lot of attention down in DC.
