There are two main reasons why alternative data often falls into the laps of technology officers. Introducing new datasets and new types of data and feeds in new formats likely requires serious consideration from a technology and resources perspective, in addition to strategic decisions about the value of particular data from the investment team. But there’s also a less practical reason: technologists are often trained in quantitative methods, modelling, computational analysis and data science and so take a natural interest in pursuing these initiatives outside their usual responsibilities.
